Tonight, the staff at Ulster Politics learned that Ulster County’s insiders club laid out their political strategy in a nasty push poll tonight against independent candidate Len Bernardo.
The relatively short poll of about 12 questions also made clear that the Desperate Dems are also desitute Dems.
If you are going to spend money on a poll you normally ask many different issues. Here, the short poll indicates that the Dems don’t have much money to spend.
Equally interesting, other than asking if the voter was voting for Auerbach or Quigley there was nothing on Auerbach meaning those guys are DIVIDED Dems as well as desperate.
The staff at Ulster Politics knows that the Democratic bloggers will say “we don’t need a poll to know issues”. Its a tired excuse but even Obama polls extensively in the swing states that will decide the election.
The poll, in case anyone cares, attempted to say Len Bernardo was part of the jail fiasco. NONSENSE. First, when the jail fiasco was going down Len Bernardo was busy running a 350 person company and Mike Hein was “busy” being Deputy County Treasurer for good ole’ boy king Lew Kirschner.
OK you desperate Dems, you kicked the teeth in of the good old boy Republicans who fouled up the jail (and boy did they deserve it!!!). That was the 2005 campaign.
But Len Bernardo is (a) not a Republican, and (b) not a guy who was making his living off county taxpayers in the TREASURER’S office when the fiasco was going down.
Anyway, candidates (of all parties), poll away with your stunts. Less than two months to Election day. It’s going to be interesting.

It's everyone who wants it both ways. There are those in the Republican Party, like the "Bradley supporters" who don't support Bernardo because he is not a Republican. They have a real hard time explaining how it was OK to have Bradley "the Independence Party Candidate" bumper stickers on their car when Holley Carnright was the candidate, and now that Catalano has brought THEM a qualified "not affiliated with the jail" Independence Party candidate on the Republican line, NOW they have a problem with that.
Democrats are just PiSSED that someone else other than Hein has 3 lines and will use anything to smear that candidate.

Len Bernardo is the GOP endorsed candidate for County Executive. Fellow GOP'ers, please get out and support him!
The facts:
1. Len Bernardo is NOT a Republican. The fact that he was endrosed by the Republicans does not make him one. Or does Mr. Hein's Working Families' Party endorsement make him a Marxist? No, just an opportunist who doesn't take into account the extremist philosophies of those whose support he seeks.
2. The jail fiasco was not, in fact, a Republican scandal - although the Democrats did an admirable job of making it seem so. In reality, several Republican Legislators voted AGAINST the jail while Democrats were UNANIMOUS in their support of the project. The truth is, the problems with the jail project can be laid firmly at the doorstep of Ulster County's Political Establishment, the Machine which ran things for so long in this County, the same Establishment to which Mr. Hein apparently owes his loyalties.
3. The Democrat Party in Ulster County is - undeniably - divided. There are at least two distinct camps within the Party, with several sub-factions and a constantly shifting internal landscape. The Democrat Party can offer us many things. Stability is not one of them.
4. Yes, Len did want Nina Postupack's endorsement. John McCain was endorsed by Joe Lieberman. George Bush was endorsed by Zell Miller. Does the fact that both those gentlemen are Democrats make McCain and Bush Democrats? Endorsements simply do not impact Len's loyalties. Period. He IS Independent - in both the traditional sense and in the sense of which Party he belongs to. He also could have avoided alot of headaches by changing Parties a long time ago and chose not to, unlike some who shall remain nameless.
5. Yes, there are some Republicans who refuse to support Len because he is not a member of their Party. Sadly, such tribalist thinking persists to this day when Party luminaries should be looking for the best qualified person who also represents their values. Instead, they are more concerned with whether or not someone is authorized to vote in their primaries and caucuses. The attitude is misguided, if for no other reason than the fact that anyone can join any Party, reagrdless of whether they agree with the Party's ideals. Being an enrolled Republican (or Democrat or Conservative or Independence Party member) does not guarantee that your heart holds true to the same ideals as the rest of your Party. Political leaders need to begin to look at what one stands for, not which County database contains one's name.
Finally, none of what I wrote above - or the comments to which I was replying or all the other anti-Bernardo nonsense being spread - means anything. These silly allegations are just noise, cleverly designed to cover up the fact that Len is light years ahead of his opponent in qualifications, experience, knowledge and talent. Over and over again, I and others have compared Len's background to his opponents. Over and over, we have challenged the Hein supporters to show us where we are wrong, to demonstarate the Democrat candidate's superior qualifications.
They never even try. It is impossible to prove that which is not true.
Len Bernardo is THE superior candidate for County Executive. He is the only possible choice to turn Ulster County around and make it a place with a future for our kids and grandkids.
So we support Bonacic from Orange County or Hein a good old boy bought and paid for. I'll take the girl in front of cutain number 3
Ulster needs fundamental change. Change doesn't come with appointing the next generation of existing political appointees.
A course altering change is needed. That is breaking the old boys network and going independent. Bernardo is first choice. Wikman second. Hein - a product of the old boys network of both major parties doesn't even rate.
Why didn't Hein take care of Auerbach in the poll. Hein cannot ignore Elliott. Elliott may not be suave and smooth like Mike, but he brings experience and ability to the ticket.
Really Hein/Auerbach is Obama/Biden. Hein is the young, charming guy with little experience and Auerbach the veteran lawmaker with the experience and ability to help when the toughest decisions need to get made.
Hein's ignoring Auerbach is a serious error.
Qualifications don't equal ethical judgement. Superior qualifications used inappropriately are more damaging than poor ones. Bernardo has shown poor ethics and judgement and cannot be trusted to do major damage as Imre points out that he is qualified to do. I'd rather have diversity of thought than lockstep disaster as we've seen from the right-wing cowboy way. All I keep hearing is Bush has an MBA! Bush has an MBA! Fool me once...
And Bernardo doesn't have an MBA. In this race, Hein is Bush. Suave, pedigreed, establishment.
Bernardo is the guy from the school of hard knocks who through tenacity, watching the checkbook, and working harder and longer than others made it in the private sector and is now in a position to give back.
Hein is the guy who couldn't make it in the private sector so they put him in a political job.
I trust the outsider with proven experience in creating jobs and watching the pocketbook (Bernardo) over the good looking guy with Bush like smile and politically connected pedigree (Hein).

Len Bernardo is the guy who stands outside the doors to Skate Time 209 making sure that kids don't leave until their parents arrive and that those who don't belong inside do not get in. He is the guy who HAS, in fact, created jobs. He is the guy who has no need of the job of Executive as a source of income, who is offering to give us his time and talent and dedication in order to make life better for us all. He is the guy with no ties to the Political Establishment.
His opponent, on the other hand, is the guy who has given us our property tax increases the past few years. He is the guy who was given his job on a silver platter as a political perk. He is the guy who owes his job and - if he wins - his election to the Machine which has controlled Ulster County politics for far too long.
Ever been to a County property tax auction, where wealthy investors buy up homes whose taxes were left unpaid by our neighbors who were incapable of keeping up with government overspending? The next time you hear someone talk about which Party is making the rich even richer at the expense of working families, think about that. Then, keep in mind that that is exactly what the County Budget under the current Administrator is causing.

And, if my claim is correct that he WAS behind the original "Lou S." posts, and several subsequent anonymous posts, on Blaber's Blog, he has ALREADY gone negative in this campaign, compounded by the unethical and cowardly and desperate tactic of posting anonymously or as a third-person sock puppet, touting his OWN hyped-up creds, while saying nasty things about his opponent or those who criticized him, free from any accountable "blame"!

Sorry, 1:19- but your degree didn't come with the grammar you need to effectively use it. When referring to the MBA, as the school MIT, or the rifle the M-1, it is correct to use "an" preceding it. (Bernardo's wife was educated but not learned as well.) Were you to say the full name rather than the abbreviation, then you wouldn't.

While you can argue about fairness, determining its effectiveness before the ad has even aired is ludicrous. Effectiveness is determined by whether or not his support base expands after viewing the ad. Trying to prognosticate how effective it will be at this stage is like trying to determine if an unborn baby will grow up to be a good lawyer or doctor.
Unless you are a Prophet sent from Heaven, neither you (nor anyone else) has the ability to decide how effective the ad will be.
As to fairness, that is very simple. Does Mr. Hein stand by the political machine, the Establishment to which he owes his livelihood or not? If he does not, the ad is not fair. All he needs to do is publicly distance himself from those who run the Machine.
He has not done so, thus far.
Moreover, he - as County Administrator - should have and (if he had the talent and ability) could have avoided the very problems which were spoken of in the ad. Conclusion: he is either not capable of fixing what ails Ulster County or he is unwilling to do so. Take your pick, either way he is wrong for this position.

In my opinion, this is not a negative ad against Hein, it's just facts.
Our taxes have in fact gone up 48% then 8% then 7%.
Mr. Hein likes to take credit for all things good in the County and then claim, oh, I'm "only" the administrator and not responsible for anything bad.
Hein was part of the Republican jail machine that brought us the 48% tax increase and he was part of the Democratic machine that brought us 7% and 8% tax increases, and that's what the ad points out.
It also points out that he has been part of administrations that have not brought any jobs.
No jobs and higher taxes in all administrations that Mike Hein has been a part of....

Hein has delivered more reform in two years than the county has seen in the last 20. that was an independent evaluation from weekly business publication Hudson Valley Business.

I went back to that thread, in which I contributed significantly, and went to the August 7, 2008 7:05 PM post, in which that author SEEMS to be the same person who has been posting since as the one I call "Chuckles"!
That was the FIRST post, I believe, where he started going after ME personally, and, besides calling me "loser," made other nasty claims and cracks about me spewing garbage (never substantiated with examples, of course) and such, which attacks were WAY further extended in his next post, making wild claims that I subsequently disproved.
This PROVES that HE initiated the personal attack unprovoked, and gives lie to his claim otherwise! Before then, I don't believe I said anything against HIM, and even afterward, just focused on refuting his claims and proving his lies and errors to be such.
Yes, it was rather bizarre, coming out of the blue like that. I still wonder what the bug up his ass is that had him ripping into me so harshly and without any visible provocation.
Fortunately, his track record on my imagined "history" has been so repeatedly off-base, as I've shown, that I doubt anyone would now take his unsubstantiated blatant assertions about my "reputation" down here (which, again, he refuses to support with viable and checkable cites and examples) seriously.

I mailed you my platform. Did you get it? Did you READ it? CAN you read? You write fairly well. I respect most of the stuff you spout, but I am the ONLY one of the three candidates WITH a platform... a bit old...a year and a half. EACH of my 19 planks is doable, if radical judging by present day political machinations.

I've wondered these many months just what went through Mike Hein's mind when he asked stellar citizen-philanthropist and renowned Kingston CPA, Bill Berardi, for his endorsement, only to be told, "I'm supporting Allan Wikman." I believe Mike's response was something akin to, "You're doing WHAT?"
