DAILY FREEMAN: WE DON’T CARE WHAT OUR LOCAL OFFICIALS THINK, AND WE WON’T EVER SAY ANYTHING NICE ABOUT ANY OF THEM – WE PROMISE!
Ulster Politics read today’s Daily Freeman editorial. The editorial, as the Freeman almost always does takes shots at everything in our dysfunctional State government.
We found it interesting thought that the Freeman, while citing what one group or person or another said, did not bother quoting the comments of our local representatives – most notably Assemblyman Kevin Cahill and Senator John Bonacic and Senator Bill Larkin.
We went to Cahill’s website, with a very user UNfriendly address of: http://www.assembly.state.ny.us/mem/?ad=101&submit=Go and found no statement on the budget by our local representative.
Obviously the Freeman cannot be faulted for not quoting a representative who says (and does) nothing. Note to Mr. Cahill: how about updating your website and getting a user friendly name for it?????
We then went to Senator Larkin’s website (www.SenatorBillLarkin.com) – a much more user friendly name, but were disappointed to find that the website really hadn’t been updated all that much.
Finally, we went to Senator Bonacic’s website (www.SenatorBonacic.com) – again, a much more user friendly name and were pleasantly surprised to see that not only has it been updated, but that it actually had a statement about the budget – and we see why the Freeman didn’t bother to print it.
Here is the Bonacic statement:
STATEMENT FROM SENATOR BONACIC ON GOVERNOR’S PROPOSED BUDGET
“No one likes what the Governor is proposing and I’m sure that includes the Governor himself. However, we have a massive deficit, the highest Medicaid burden in the nation, and plummeting revenues. Now is the time for every elected official to show the courage and leadership to meet the current fiscal challenges and make the necessary difficult choices.
“We are all elected—not simply to support or oppose party leaders, but to make tough choices that impact New Yorkers. The Governor’s budget has a lot of pain, however, the pain must be spread in an equitable manner so that key government services remain, while making sure the costs are not placed on local governments causing an increase in property taxes. This will be a priority for me.”
It is apparent that Bonacic’s statement was not in keeping with the Freeman’s desire to label all of
It’s going to be a tough year and we all need to pull together – which is about what the Daily Freeman said, except of course they could not bother saying that at least one of our local officials gets it.
It’s true that Bonacic did not embrace the taxes and fees put forward by the Governor, but at least he had the decency to look us all in the eye and say (in a nicer way), “stop your whining, nobody likes this but we’ve got a job to do here”.
Remembering that Bonacic was the only one with the guts to call upon Joe Bruno to step down as Senate Majority Leader we are not completely surprised that he has the political independence to say we need to work together instead of joining the partisan attacks on the Governor’s budget which so dominate politics these days.
The Freeman’s editorial was dead on – we expect our politicians to stop whining and get the job done. Would it be too much for the paper to quote our local officials and acknowledge that at least one of them, whether you agree with him or not, seems to feel the same way.

John Bonacic has always been head & shoulders above any of the NYS elected officials.
He carries himself with dignity , class & pride,, rare from these other whores we suffer with,
He is intelligent & trulu committed to Public Service.
I expect nothing less from Bonacic,
Look @ his daughter in the O.C. Legislature,, practically a perfect attendance record plus she does the People's business , truly.
He is a good Senator & obviously a good Father, too.
Go John Go !!!
I guess the aliens have left and the regular spineless, clueless, Freeman writers are back.
Do you honestly think Cahill controls the Assembly Webpage addresses?
Let's see how good Bonacic does under a Democratic Senate. I can hear him crying already. I suspect he won't be as popular once his millions in member items dry up.
Look for a very stiff challenge for him next time around. He is a power hungry control freak who has taken over a County party for a County he doesn't even live in.
"Anyone can buy a domain name (ie - AssemblymanCahill.com) and have it
autoforwarded to the Assembly page. Cahill should do that.
As to Bonacic,
remember, he had years in the Assembly minority with no member items and managed
to move up to the Senate under those conditions when he only had a tiny portion
of the Senate District he now represents. That is called a work ethic."
We need politicians who are willing to work with people of all parties to get the job done.
The Freeman is right to recognize that as is Bonacic. People are sick of partisan attacks and back and forth.
This year there will probably not be any member items a/k/a pork anyway given the bad situation in our economy.
"Cahill should do that"
Why because you say so? You won't even put your own name on here why should Cahill or anyone else listen to you?
LOL......
That's 2 posts in a row where you spend half the time saying what you don't like about the Freeman and then you wind up saying you agree with these 2 editorials.
1:23 - read it slower if you need help in reading comprehension. The point of the post is that the Freeman, all the while claiming to be all knowing, refuses to acknowledge when anyone else is right.
The Freeman is right on the point that we need to stop the blame game, but is wrong to assert everyone in Albany is part of that.
We have few independent minded officials in Albany these days but thankfully the only one with the guts to take on his own party leadership represents us in the Senate.
I don't like Paterson's budget and taxes either, but Bonacic is right - we need adults in Albany not brats who run around engaging in the blame game (like Larkin) or sucking up to the leadership (like Cahill).
As to taking over a political party, I have no idea what you are talking about and really don't care. We need LESS politics.
Well, Ira (AKA 1:23) The reason for their ambivalence is simple, they are idiots. They have no conviction, foundation in truth or fact. They just like to bitch and pontificate. Sounds like typical right wingers to me.
How could 1:23 be Ira? That post says the Freeman was right and wrong. You think Ira would say the Freeman is wrong?
1:23(Ira) Never agreed or disagreed, he just pointed out the conflicting opinions in one post. It is Ira or some other Freeman shill.
