2009 brings to Ulster County a new year. Ulster Politics would like to take this opportunity to suggest some New Year resolutions by those in the public eye in Ulster County:
Bob Aiello – get healthy and hopefully then get to some meetings of the Legislature so voters don’t give him a trim. Bob is truly an independent – sometimes it appears he walks away from the GOP solely to say he did it, but health is important so we hope Bob resolves to take care of his.
Joe Roberti – continued hard work. Joe works hard for him and his 3 kids. He just got a new job and we hope he has a strong 2009.
The Parete family – they should resolve to continue working for the Democratic party notwithstanding the lack of gratitude from some of their own. They should also resolve to stay in the County Legislature and not have Rob lose to Nina Postupack. Two brothers in the Legislature means clout and Governor Paterson should find a place for Rob Parete.
The voters or Marbletown, Olive, and Hurley: Should resolve to send a Republican to replace Peter Kraft. Now that Kraft is soon to be officially out, the voters of that District should resolve to find a moderate GOP person like Linda Bertone to join the Parete brothers in the County Legislature.
Party bosses Julian and Mario. Julian should resolve to try and get to the right of the ultra-liberal wing of his party so as to keep the Democrats moving strong in Ulster County. Mario should resolve to get a long with people and actually do some work instead of telling others to do it; and while he’s at it, perhaps raise some money like he promised he would do.
The Conservative Party. Now that they have new leadership they should resolve to be true conservatives and work to elect ONLY people who promise not to vote for a tax increase in 2010 and 2011 and end corporate give aways.
The Solar Consortium. Should resolve to lay out every job they have “created”, how much in taxpayer cash they have received so far, and the names of the companies all their employees came from preceding their work at the Solar Consortium, lay out every company which is a member of the consortium, in short SHOW US THE MONEY AND THE JOBS!!!
Lance Matteson. Should resolve to create at least one private sector job in a for profit entity that pays more than $50,000 a year which is not helped with any taxpayer funded grants or loans – in other words, should resolve to create private sector jobs.
March Gallagher. Should resolve that the only CIA work she will do is dinner at the Culinary Institute of America and not dirty tricks as an IDA Board member against small business in Ulster County.
Ulster County Chamber of Commerce. See Lance Matteson.
Jeremy Blaber. This talented young man who all on the Republican side love to hate should resolve to take better care of himself. If he does that, and tones it down a bit, he could have a really bright future.
Mike Hein. Should resolve not to be a figure head puppet but to actually lead Ulster County government. So far he’s not off to a good start. A secret economic development task force led by a Sullivan County resident all while being conspicuously silent on the $600,000 office bond renovation issue. Mike, that’s not leading the way, that’s hiding in the corner.
Len Bernardo. Should resolve to work with the Independence Party to make it a force for good and true independence in Ulster County.
The Marlboro Gang a/k/a solid south. Should resolve to watch their flank as Town elections in Marlboro threw a curveball in 2007 and could do the same in 2009 to them in the County Legislature.
Richard Gerentine. Leader of the GOP Legislators in the Solid South should resolve to spend a lot of time in Newburgh, Fishkill, and Poughkeepsie to prepare for a run for the State Assembly.
Elliott Auerbach. Should resolve to be a truly independent Comptroller and take on all the good old boys who backed his opponent.
Jim Quigley. Should resolve to run for Town of Ulster Supervisor. Quigley is at heart an executive more than an accountant and should dispatch Nicky Woerner with ease.
Nicky Woerner. Should resolve to limit all police activities other than those carried out by actual law enforcement to watching re-runs of CHIPs.
Ulster GOP Legislators. Should resolve to hire a campaign consultant and run their campaigns free of Mario Catalano’s influence since it’s not like he’s going to do anything for them anyway.
Robin Yess. The newly appointed GOP Executive Director should resolve to change her mind and say NO to this “job.”
Social Services Commissioner Rodriguez. Should resolve to not pay section 8 rents to County Executive Mike Hein and his wife.
County Legislator Hector Rodriguez. Should resolve to find someone to run a primary challenge to Susan Zimet.
County Legislator Susan Zimet. Should resolve to find someone to run a primary to challenge Hector Rodriguez.
County Legislator Brian Cahill. Should resolve to stop capitalizing on his brother Kevin’s name – it’s not that impressive.
Kevin Cahill. Should resolve to actually seek a vote on his property tax reform legislation instead of just posturing for two more years.
Peter Lopez and Cliff Crouch. Should resolve to openly call Cahill on the carpet for his faking it when it comes to doing anything in Albany.
Tom Kirwan. Should resolve to move to warm weather after having been one of the few honorable people in Albany for the past ten years.
John Bonacic. Should resolve to tell every single Republican Senator “I told you so” about Joe Bruno’s sinking the Republican ship.
Bill Larkin. Should resolve to continue serving with amazing vigor for a guy who is 80 and announce he is running for re-election early so as to put to rest the rumors that the guy is going out to pasture.
Maurice Hinchey. Should resolve to declare his intent to seek appointment to Caroline Kennedy’s Senate seat. Hinchey is too old to gain substantial seniority in the Senate but he could give us 8 good years there and be a voice for upstate.
Chuck Schumer. Should resolve to actually pass one of the bills he announces at his weekly Sunday press conferences. So far the guy has passed bill’s renaming a bunch of post offices but not much else.

Linda Bertone switched her party back to Democrat. Any other suggestions for Republican in Hurley, Marbletown and Olive?
Joe Roberti does not work hard for the Legislature. Maybe he works hard at securing his own patronage job, but that is about it.
In 2009.
I am trying my hardest not to get sued (or, indeed, to upset anyone).
Made that mistake in 2008.
"I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious." Quote from Thomas Jefferson.
When will this situation change? Maybe when "sheeple" stop electing parasites.
Sheeple defined- the term sheeple is often used to denote persons who voluntarily acquiesce to a perceived authority, or suggestion without sufficient research to fully understand the scope of the ramifications involved in that decision, and thus undermine their own human individuality or in other cases give up certain rights. The implication of sheeple is that as a collective, people believe whatever they are told, especially if told so by a perceived authority figure believed to be trustworthy, without processing it or doing adequate research to be sure that it is an accurate representation of the real world around them. The term is often used in a political sense.
Here's one. Rich Cahill should get ready to run for Mayor.
10:23 PM, Richie is going to need more time. Lol
I think... I'm going to like anonymity. :)
UC GOP Legislators may not be able to afford a campaign consultant but they certainly could put together a Campaign Committee. I would think each district could find a hard working volunteer to serve. Campaign Committee could help coordinate county wide events, pool resources, design templates, etc.
Then again, they could listen and wait for Mario to "call to Arms" those Town Committees. Oh, did I mention that Town Committees focus on Town Campaigns. Multi-town Legislators are like ugly step children to Town Committees, be polite and listen and then wish them the best. No money, no volunteers, no events...all those things go toward Town Elections.
So thinking of running for Ulster County Legislator? Hope you are from the solid south, otherwise your on your OWN.
Rich Gerentine in the Assembly? Tedisco's people know he's a joke--so much that they bounced him from his no show job. Gerentine will never, ever get funding from RACC for an Assembly run.
Nooooonan is just jealous because no one will hire him--for obvious reasons.
9:40 is RIGHT. I ran for Legislator and found this to be EXACTLY true.
Town Committees are mostly concerned with the Town Candidates.
Yes, they smile and wish you well... and want to "interview" you to give you their blessing.
What a joke.
Want to run for Legislator as a Republican?
Make sure you can run/coordinate and finance your own campaign. Also be sure that you can do your own campaign financial disclosures.
You will be on your own.
Don't let them tell you anything else. They are full of it.
Joe Roberti is a putz. He is a loose cannon with a big mouth & a gavone, to boot.
He is only out for Joe Roberti. He has spoken against G.O.P. principles when it serves HIS purposes. He only came out to work for Len Bernardo because he was made to feel guilty for his new job. HA !! Roberti = L O S E R
to 9:30pm (aka Noonan)
Roberti has accomplished more in the Legislature than you'll ever hope to accomplish. Noonan is in his position purely as a front for the Marlborough guys. They'll never let him be in power in Reps take over the Legislature. Wise up, Noonan.
is 4:58pm Butch Dener? sounds like it. There is no bigger traitor to the GOP than Dener. He worked with Dems to overthrow Sinagra. Hey, Butch--tell everyone why you couldn't work for the Sheriff's Dept? or do you want me to tell it?
Yeah, Roberti is so anti-Republican that he's the Chair of the Saugerties Republicans, the town with the most Republicans in Ulster County.
hey 6:18 --- you proved my point.
Since Jen Peetom left as Chair,, the Saugerties GOP is under Al's boy's thumb.
See what they did to Bernardo ???
They all backed Hein cause they were told to, to protect Nina.
Sold ol' Len down da river, TRUTH IS TRUTH !!
& the real reason Dener resigned from the UCSD was cause of pressure from that Conservative witch in Port Ewen on Bockelman - she wanted her puppet in there & she got him. Dan Ryan is Bonnie Hewitt's guy, lock stock & barrell -
Dener never saw the betrayal coming,
why would you think that was me ???
i NEVER worked with the Dems to oust Phil Sinagra,,, i wasnt involved at all with the County, then,, i enjoyed it but wasnt involved - Danny worked the system well & secretly did what everyone in the GOP wanted - Phil to get his comeuppance - he was a lot more arrogant & insufferable then & he was PJ Savago's hatchet man & that earned him a lot of animosity, too.
You think you know why i resigned from the UCSD ??? Boooshwah, bro,,
you know nothing,,
identify yourself or shut up, cowardly poster -
,,,& no, that wasnt me before,,, i have more respect for Roberti's Father, Joe SR than that.
Respect - a word you arent familiar with, obviously.
None of these postings are mine. someone told me to check this out just recently. I hope everyone would just calm down and all start woking for the betterment of Ulster County and have a Happy and Healthy New Year
Noonan, starts trouble then runs away from it. Noonan has no respect from his caucus or the Republicans et alia.
I googled butch dener & saw a video where he said he tried to endorse a democrat for new paltz town supervisor over a republican. talk about a traitor!
SOME people care more about their community than the Party - He is too be commended for that -
The republican was a nice guy but had no gravitas to be a leader - plus he had too many conflicts due to his construction business -
The Democrat does a good job of balancing her views & the needs of New Paltz
Google ??? some reference - you idiot
to 10:39a (aka Butch)
I think you have been smoking to much of your own Boooshwah...
Republicans attacking republicans! They should be more concerned with doing the peoples work than who works harder than who and who is a traitor to the party. I see Glen Noonan at every event or function there is. If called about an issue he answers whether you like the answer or not. Joe Roberti must be doing likewise or he would not be reelected by his people. I for one will be glad that single member districts are just around the corner. Then it will be whom is best suited for the seat.

Blaber finally shut down his blog or so he claims. I will take him at his word. Good for him!
Happy New Year Everyone! Let's start off 2009 with a show of support for our current
County Clerk: Nina Postupak she'll be doing her official announcement this Tuesday, January 6th at
12:15 p.m. (on everyone's lunch) in front of the County Office Building
I'd appreciate anyone who could stop by and show your support.
This is one campaign I will be working on diligently and anyone who would like to offer their help, please email me and let me know. We're starting early (since us girls don't wait to the last minute) we'll be having meetings/fund raisers soon after 2009 starts. (any help you can offer would be appreciated)
Happy New Year!
Regards,
Maryann DeGroodt
Maryann,
You may want to provide the campaign donation info for Nina. Campaigns are extremely expensive, make every event a fundraiser.
In response to Ms. Degroot's comments, Nina has to first resolve whether she is a Republican or not before her fellow party members support her.
Is she a Republican, Democrat, or whichever way the wind is blowing political hack.
Ms. Degroot's speaking up for Nina does nothing to assuage concerns. Nothing.
To 9:58 PM (aka Maryann DeGroodt): Hope Nina is not leaving her in charge of printing her campaign flyers when she can't even spell her last name correctly. Now she throws her support to a Republican when she was entrenched in the Hein camp during the last Election? Campaigning for a Republican turned Democrat because it was the right thing to do? Flip flopping for what now? Another relative need job protection? Thought by now someone would have offered her a voter registration form to change her party affiliation. "Traitor" is an appropriate, suitable choice.
We know Nina is a Republican. We know Al is the Green Party, not the environmental Party, you know the "Real Green" party that the likes of Richie, Al,Maryann, Aaron and that punk Ulster supervisor belong to, the "Greenback" Party. Good News for Nina, the Greenbacks have greenback, Bad News she needs every Republican vote and her association with the Greenbacks will divide the Republican vote. The D&I lines will kick the crap out of the R & C lines in November. Odds of getting the I Line, 1 in 10. Then again, our senator loves those greenbucks too. Here's the play, 100k to orange county king and you've got the I line. Then another 250 for the campaign. Win by 500 votes with R,C & I (Nina's better known than Jim).
It will be fun to look back on this prediction.
To think that Ms. Degroodt would call herself a Republican is LAUGHABLE.
How could she expect ANYONE to join her after her support of the Democratic County Executive candidate, Mike Hein?
What's next Postupack wants Bernardo's support after she shunned him and stayed "neutral" during his election?
Nina would "never" ask Bernardo for his help.
At least that's what Ms. Postupack said when Bernardo asked her to support him.
I think NEVER was the word that she used in her conversation with him.
She would NEVER ask him for his help.
I'm sure that Nina is a woman of her word.
Just letting you know that spreadingourwings.blogspot.com (new / modified) is up and running again! N.
BTW, Happy New Year! N.
Well put 10:15.
I don't think I could have said it better, and don't even have anything to add to it.
Bravo
The biggest danger facing Republicans is not the increased enrollment among Democrats. Let's face it, even when there were more Republicans, the non-enrolled voters were the deciding factor.
The great peril before us is our own lack of unity. As long as we are fighting amongst ourselves, the Democrats will win. Rules, motions, procedural ploys, feuds, personal gripes, agendas and so forth will be the death of us.
No matter how certain you are that you are right, if you are a Republican going after another Republican, you are wrong. No matter how much better you think the other candidate is, if you refuse to support the candidate of the Republican Party, you are wrong.
The individual race and candidate are far less important than the common goal of taking back our County from those who are taking it in the wrong direction. There is not a single one of us who is more important than that cause. No one.
Benjamin Franklin is famously quoted as having said, "We must hang together, gentlemen...else, we shall most assuredly hang separately." Nowhere is that more true than among Ulster County Republicans. The Democrats are in disarray. They have forced out the man who is personally responsible for the Democrat advance over the past several years and there is no one among them who is fit to follow in his footsteps. They are divided into factions and weakening themselves with every internal dispute.
As long as we can unite and put aside our differences, we can prevail a against a numerically superior yet greatly weakened opponent. If we cannot or will not do so, then we have no one to blame for our losses other than ourselves.
The time has come for us to forgive, forget, shake hands, embrace, walk shoulder to shoulder and prevail. We can win. We must win. The only obstacle is the pettiness within our own ranks. It is an obstacle we can easily cast aside.
The only question is, will we choose to do so?
Imre, I usually agree with you, but I must disagree on this point.
There are some real turds in the Republican Party that have been giving Republicans a bad name for too long.
I feel that it is my duty to not support these turds that are giving Republicans a bad name in Ulster County.
Once we have rid the party of these greedy, in it for themselves turds, we can unite.
Until then, maybe some Democrats deserve to win certain races.
Imre is right and so is 1:30am; so how do we when with rotten apples in our GOP basket? Simple yet very unlikely before the next Election. We need a leader that can inspire when speaking and then have the courage to publicly hold his members accountable. Example: county town committee member general meeting, unite and charge members with a task. The next month go around the room , town by town and have the town chair account for their progress. No progress, a warning with encouragement & suggestions for progress, next month no progress committe chair OUT. Therefore, lets say your a committee chair that doesn't support the County's candidate, just step aside for a year or two. No one says you have to support candidates that you think are turds, but you can't keep a leadership roll. Just allow a republican in your town that does support the county candidate to step in and do their best.
The biggest problem is GOP committee members using their influence to do nothing. So many committees are dead in the water. Here's a good guideline, if you have been on a Town Committee for more than 20 years, time to step aside and let fresh blood in. You can still be a strong GOP supportor in your Town. Keep in mind, committees are to get candidates elected not a social group looking for brownie points among themselves. Too many committee members have lost focus, the new motto should be "It's about the Candidates Stupid!" at every committee meeting.
Wake up we lost, time to bring in new Blood; County Chair, County Executive Committee, Town Chairs and Town Committee Members. I would change the bylaws and add term limits of 20 years.
9:53 - thank you.... I am 1:30 and I agree with you.
When I referred to the turds, I was referring to elected officials within the GOP, but you are 200% right, many of the Town Committee Chairs and Committeemen are HUGE DEADWEIGHT TURDS who work against candidates by doing NOTHING
They need to be held accountable for that
1:30 -
I think that there is a distinct difference between filtering out the bad apples using the democratic principles upon which the Republican Party was founded and using those processes to settle individual scores and advance personal agendas and ambitions.
Obviously, the Party will only become stronger if its members compete for leadership positions and thereby sideline those who do not live up to their positions, replacing them with those who are better. Certainly, it is in our best interests to bring new blood to the forefront at times, in order to make sure that future continuity of quality leadership is guaranteed. Both of those factors go without saying.
However, in the process, we have to be very careful not to split our own Party into factions as Democrats have done.
It is to that very dangerous possibility which seems to be rearing its head lately to which I refer in my previous post. Another symptom of the disunity which may be smoldering below the surface is the fact that some prominent Republicans have recently either refused to work on behalf of the Party's candidates or have actually worked on behalf of Democrat candidates.
I stand by my previous comment that we must openly and enthusiastically support our candidates even in those circumstances when we may have personal reasons for supporting a candidate from the other side. Every time a Republican supports a Democrat, we are actually strengthening the Democrat Party in Ulster County as a whole.
Whenever the Democrats raise our taxes or erode our freedoms, we can thank those Republicans who did not demonstrate strength of will in supporting our candidates.
Unity is the single greatest tool and weapon we have in bringing freedom back to Ulster County. If we fail to use it, we have no one to blame but ourselves.
The Republican Party - GOP History
The Republican Party was born in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge. The first informal meeting of the party took place in Ripon, Wisconsin, a small town northwest of Milwaukee. The first official Republican meeting took place on July 6th, 1854 in Jackson, Michigan. The name "Republican" was chosen because it alluded to equality and reminded individuals of Thomas Jefferson's Democratic-Republican Party. At the Jackson convention, the new party adopted a platform and nominated candidates for office in Michigan.
In 1856, the Republicans became a national party when John C. Fremont was nominated for President under the slogan: "Free soil, free labor, free speech, free men, Fremont." Even though they were considered a "third party" because the Democrats and Whigs represented the two-party system at the time, Fremont received 33% of the vote. Four years later, Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican to win the White House.
The Civil War erupted in 1861 and lasted four grueling years. During the war, against the advice of his cabinet, Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves. The Republicans of the day worked to pass the Thirteenth Amendment, which outlawed slavery, the Fourteenth, which guaranteed equal protection under the laws, and the Fifteenth, which helped secure voting rights for African-Americans.
The Republican Party also played a leading role in securing women the right to vote. In 1896, Republicans were the first major party to favor women's suffrage. When the 19th Amendment finally was added to the Constitution, 26 of 36 state legislatures that had voted to ratify it were under Republican control. The first woman elected to Congress was a Republican, Jeanette Rankin from Montana in 1917.
Presidents during most of the late nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth century were Republicans. The White House was in Republican hands under Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush. Under the last two, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, the United States became the world's only superpower, winning the Cold War from the old Soviet Union and releasing millions from Communist oppression.
***Behind all the elected officials and the candidates of any political party are thousands of hard-working staff and volunteers who raise money, lick the envelopes, and make the phone calls that every winning campaign must have. The national structure of our party starts with the Republican National Committee. Each state has its own Republican State Committee with a Chairman and staff. The Republican structure goes right down to the neighborhoods, where a Republican precinct captain every Election Day organizes Republican workers to get out the vote.
Most states ask voters when they register to express party preference. Voters don't have to do so, but registration lists let the parties know exactly which voters they want to be sure vote on Election Day. Just because voters register as a Republican, they don't need to vote that way - many voters split their tickets, voting for candidates in both parties. But the national party is made up of all registered Republicans in all 50 states. They are the heart and soul of the party. Republicans have a long and rich history with basic principles: Individuals, not government, can make the best decisions; all people are entitled to equal rights; and decisions are best made close to home. ****
The symbol of the Republican Party is the elephant. During the mid term elections way back in 1874, Democrats tried to scare voters into thinking President Grant would seek to run for an unprecedented third term. Thomas Nast, a cartoonist for Harper's Weekly, depicted a Democratic jackass trying to scare a Republican elephant - and both symbols stuck. For a long time Republicans have been known as the "G.O.P." And party faithfuls thought it meant the "Grand Old Party." But apparently the original meaning (in 1875) was "gallant old party." And when automobiles were invented it also came to mean, "get out and push." That's still a pretty good slogan for Republicans who depend every campaign year on the hard work of hundreds of thousands of volunteers to get out and vote and push people to support the causes of the Republican Party.

**It's easier to throw names at someone rather than educate yourselves on the GOP definition. Did you know about split tickets & working hard for people you believe in? I do, I've worked hard my entire life to get where I am & I for one pick and choose whose campaign I can/will work on. It's my time, money and hard work I put into it: nothing else. Perhaps if everyone followed my lead...there would be supporting the best person for the job and not the party affiliations. This is why we have the problems locally and nationally we have today. Fight and work for what& who you believe in.....in the end, it's worth it. I can hold my head up, while the rest of you hide behind anonymous posts on blogs.
Who the hell cares what you think Degroodt? Honestly, you are as narcissistic as the come.
