Daily Freeman uses passive aggressive tactics

In case you missed the Editorial in the Saturday Freeman (which you probably did) here's another look.

It seems to be a passive aggressive swipe at Hein.

While the words in the editorial have teeth... using sarcasm...... quoting Mike Hein's "assistant" and then saying.... Right - as if to say that they don't believe her.

Then, they are even so blatant as to say as it regards Hein's new policy "And, yes, in your everyday life you would call that “a lie.”" Wow - did they really just say that?

Pretty aggressive.

So then why, Daily Freeman, put it in the Saturday paper?

You wanted as many people to read it as possible..... Right

Why not put it out when readers are most likely to read it?

Mojo says you have balls.... We're not so sure.

and BTW, everyone still wants to know why you are giving Hein and Gallagher a free pass.

Neither department heads nor rank-and-file employees of Ulster County government will be allowed to talk to the media without permission from the top under the new regime, according to a directive from the county’s spanking new executive government.

There are departments in Ulster County government that even are requiring employees to sign what is, in effect, a gag order to obtain compliance.

So it is that one of the first acts of Ulster’s first county executive, Michael Hein, is to throttle public employees who are paid with public tax money to handle the public’s business.

It is not an auspicious start.

An assistant to Hein says the executive branch was faced with what to do about a policy that had existed since 1985, but not necessarily been enforced. The goal, she says, is not to deny information, but “to make sure that when we talk to the press, we can give you the most complete and hopefully accurate information available."

Right.

Would everyone who believes stopping employees and department heads from directly answering questions about the public’s business will result in a more complete and candid understanding of that business, please step forward?

It just doesn’t work that way. The experience of news organizations is exactly the opposite. Where government employees and officers are throttled, information about the operation of public business can become both harder to get and less trustworthy.

What you too often get is information that either a) is too distant from the source to be authoritative, comprehensive or nuanced, or b) you get a willful spin designed to put the best possible face on an unpleasant situation. And, yes, in your everyday life you would call that “a lie.”

Government is not private enterprise and Hein shouldn’t be trying to run it like a private enterprise when it comes to information about public business. It is supposed to be the public’s business and the freest possible flow of information furthers that business, even when it makes things uncomfortable, as it sometimes will, for elected officials.

Rumor - Catalano is stepping down on the 31st. Any truth to this? It's said that Mario and Quigley refuse to support Postupak/Spada and want to see her fail without them. They will circle their wagons and bucks around the Town of Ulster supervisor race.

This came from a unreliable source and may be just another wild goose chase. Can anyone confirm?

Nina will NOT fail, with or without them,,

if this is true, as a committeeman
i would be horrified.

It will make me work even harder for Nina,, she is a TRUE PUBLIC SERVANT, irelevant of Albert's connection, she does good work for the taxpayers of UC & that is all i need to know.

F**K that other baby bulls**t.

Nickie better hope not!

31st of which month? So if you consider your source so unreliable why even bother?

No one listens to Glenn anymore anyway.

Anonymous said...

How about getting back on topic for a second?
The Freeman is much more passive than agressive, which is demonstrated by month after month and year after year of its inability to report much truth of what goes on in Kingston including the crime beat.

HEY - some of us listen to Glenn,, he is the hardest worker we have, he is constantly trying to get good, electible candidates, he takes on anyone he feels isnt working to GOP victories, PLUS MARIO DOESN'T LIKE HIM.
What more do ya need, in a leader,

lay off of Noonan, he is doing the work none of you want to do.
With a little help, he could be much more victorious, HE DOES GET RE-ELECTED, yes ???

Who cares about passive, etc with the Freeman. It prints some good stuff and then piles of fluff.

Now back to someting we can change, Mario has to go. Nina is heads and heels above that snootty, fruity flake. Mario plans on doing all the fundraising for the county GOP candidates in 2009. Does that mean our candidates will not have any funds come election season? or will big Jim open his wallet, again?

Mario is a one man show with out a spotlight. I vote to bring Pete back! Pete may have ruled with an iron fist but at least he had influence and clout.

Why is it that a few certain people like to attack Glen Noonan? This man works harder than any of the egotist's that sit on the county committee. I can only hope the county has fundraising plans that do not include asking benefactors to finance campaigns. The party in Ulster is almost at the bottom here.

Glenn Noonan is aces in my book. He may have a little "Biden" in him when it comes to speaking to the press, but he never stops working for all of us. Politically, he has been the lone voice for GOP in Ulster. Mario, hell you can't reach Mario and he doesn't return calls. Glenn picks up on the first ring and try's his best.

Glenn is the defacto leader of the GOP in Ulster County. However, he needs our support and encouragement. How long can one man be expected to carry the load? When was the last time Mario twisted some of the Saugerties Legislators' arms to support Glenn. Instead Mario makes half ass attempts behind the scenes to dump Glenn at every opportunity. Now, for the good of Nina & county legislature races, Glenn is working with Mario to focus 2009 campaign efforts. $100.00 says Mario will renege on his committment to Glenn and support someone else for Majority Leader if we take back the county. Mario says one thing and then does another, how foolish does he think the rest of us are?

As I said, Glenn is aces.

This is much ado about nothing. Just about every administration has a press policy similar to this. Vin Martello was hired to be the press liason. This policy is simply to insure that he is able to do his job without getting ten different people talking to the press at once and giving ten different messages. There is nothing wrong with this policy. As a supervisor of employees, would you want your people speaking to the press without speaking to you first. That would make no sense. This policy is common and makes perfect sense.

The Ulster County Republican Committee is not going to endorse County Clerk Nina Postupack for re-Election? I'm told this was said at the GOP County Executive Board Meeting; "She didn't want my bumper sticker on her car so why should we support her bid?". Mario, shame on you. Nina is one of the few bright stars. The UC Republican Executive Committee does not represent our views in Saugerties. First you tell our committee that "we are not Republicans" because you falsely accuse us of secretly supporting Bradley and now you have the audacity to hold a UC Committee meeting and trash Nina. Your actions prove our point, Saugerties Committee does not recognize you as our GOP County Chair. I understand that the only thing both sides of the Kingston GOP Committee can agree on, Mario has to go.

Anonymous said...

2:48 you are full of shit and obviously weren't at the meeting and got bad information.

Mario did not say he didn't support Nina. Jim Quigley said that his wife resigned as her treasurer. He did mention that she didn't put his bumper sticker on her car. BUT in the end he said THAT HE WILL support Nina and will work to get her re-elected.

Mario asked the committee what they thought about seeking a CROSS-ENDORSEMENT for Nina from the Democrats. Mario did not interject his opinion one way or the other.

It was the group who said that while they support Nina, they do not want to see a cross endorsement for several reason.

Even though Miss Thang Nina couldn't manage to show up at the meeting, EVERYONE who was there, including Mario wanted her to win the election for the Republicans.

The sentiment in the entire room was that we want her to win, but aren't willing to seek the cross endorsement for her. The room wanted it to be a win for Republicans, not a joint Rep/Dem win. And weren't willing to trade anything for that cross endorsement.

Even I have my own issues with Mario, but you fu**ers in Saugerties have got this one wrong. Get off his back. Get the story straight we wall want here to win. We would just like her to get off her a$$ and work for herself and lead the team of all candidates on the Republican side.

She seems, in my opinion, like should would rather stay on the fence and protect her own a$$ and not lead the other Republican candidates.

But then again you Saugerties people are superior to everyone else and I'm sure that you'll straighten us out.

Nina may be a bright star but she has no loyalty except to herself.

At some point you have to stand for something. I hope Schreibman finds someone to run hard at Nina.

I don't care who wins - or who the heck issues me my driver's license. I just think people should work to be elected and not have it as some sort of entitlement because they hung out long enough at the County Clerk's office to move up to County Clerk.

only a stoner like Butch Dener (5:46p & 11:17a)listens to Noonan. Sure, Noonan works hard because no one will hire him for a job (no matter how hard he begs). He has nothing else to do. He may work hard, but he doesn't work smart. Look at how he lets his buddy Donaldson off the hook all the time. If Reps take over, it won't be Mario that gets rid of Noonan, it will be the Marlborough guys.

Anonymous said...

If Noonan is the GOP "de facto leader," we are all in trouble. His supporters will say he's responsible for the GOP pickups in his district, but the district is overwhelming Republican. He is not respected by the press, the business community, or our elected state officials. Those who portray him as Mr. GOP forget his 20+ year history of screwing his party over.

Ulster Politics said...

For all of you conspiracy theorists out there, Ulster Politics can neither confirm not deny if 5:28's accusation that 5:46 and 11:17 are Butch Dener are correct.

Really, we don't know, and we don't really care.

So don't be writin' in tell us that this blog is not secure.

To all those who weren't at the UCGOP Meeting Saturday January 3rd.
Here is what I said:

In my closing statement (after several people had already left) I said "United the UCGOP will win and individually we will fail". I pledged to support the Republican canidate for Ulster County Clerk. I went on to say that Nina was the best canidate for the position and I would work to get her elected.

Anonymous said...

Nina will never support Republicans for fear of pissing off the Democrats. Live with it, she is Republican by enrollment only. She could care less. Look at the last election results. She won on the Dem line, not the Rep line. Why should she support Republicans, they didn't support her. If the Dems put up a candidate, even a so so candidate, she loses. Numbers don't lie. Just look at Quigley as an example. It doesn't matter how much money she throws at it, she will lose.

I am sick of the problems within the republican party. Mario has to go for the good of the party. To have his people trashing saugerties and Glenn is disgusting. Mario resign and take that worthless county exec board with you. Since your first day as chair and with your clueless board you have screwed the party and county up. Republicans need someone to step up and challenge Mario and send this whole group into retirement. Hang a chair who cares sign up.

What about the 14,510 Blank Votes from the November 2005. It is clear they didn't support Nina then. Who will they spport in a two canidate race?

Does this spell the end of mario, tommy, janie, patty, running the party into the ground? The republicans need new fresh blood.

Mario Must GO!!!

Please for the good of the Party & County, do the right thing NOW for the 2009 candidates and Republicans in general. You know that between your job (3-4 days a week), your family obligations, your consulting work (often requiring travel) and your new love at HQ, there is precious little time left for you to to devote to the GOP Chair.

It's time.

Hey 5:41 if the district is mainly republican why were two of the seats held previously by democrats? Glenn has done a bangup job getting republicans elected in the district. Tell me what Mario and his group have done? Did we win the executive race? How about comptroller? What exactly has this group done to crow about? Stop bashing Glenn and bash the chair and his exec board that are worthless.

Will the three ring circus known as the republican committee ever come to an end?

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't this blog put up a poll to see who republicans support Glenn Noonan or Mario and his crew. Set the poll up so only one vote can be registered per computer.

The Catalano Test:

Give him a call at HQ or his cell and then wait. How many days for a return call?

A) 1 to 2
B) 3 to 4
C) never

Again, stick to the rules, a single call to Mario. I would be shocked if anyone gets an A. Hell I called to buy dinner tickets and still couldn't get a call back. At first I thought it was the fact that I'm a nobody, just a hard working Republican supporter. Then, after mentioning at a function, everyone chimed in, Mario is impossible to reach.

Now he placed a person in "Charge of Daily Decisions" at HQ because he recognizes that he is difficult to reach. OK, now we have an acting Chair that has to filter all decsions thru Mario and , get back to you. That will work, here's one better; outsource the calls to HQ to India.

These blogs allow me to figure out the difference between local Republicans and local Democrats.
Republicans can't spell, and Democrats can't spell anything out.
That about sums it up.
