Politicians and their Petitions
This November isn't just about electing the President of the United States, we have a lot of positions right here in Ulster County that will be on the ballot. For the rest of June, it's a race to gather signatures. Ulster Politics knows that for all of you "political insiders" this is "old news". But there are a lot of enrolled voters out there who have no idea what is going on right now. Our political process says that the candidates that want to be on the ballot this November have to gather signatures from enrolled voters in the parties that they are seeking endorsements from. Be a part of the process! The candidates and committee persons will be working hard gathering signatures until about the first week in July. If you are enrolled in any of the parties recognized on the ballot in Ulster County and you haven't signed a petition for your party yet, help your party out by letting your Town Chairman, Committee Persons, or Candidates know that you would like to sign their petition. The "worker-bees" of the parties have their petitions with them where ever they go.
Also take some time to look at your house. Is your house number visible? People who carry petitions and try and figure out who lives where from there from their “walking lists” will tell you that there are a lot of homes that the house number is not easily identifiable. While you may not care if the local political party can’t find your house number, it is important that in an emergency that police, fire and EMS workers can. Emergency officials recommend that you consider putting reflective numbers on your house. Statistics show that most emergencies happen at night. House numbers can be posted . . .
- directly on your house, business or garage
- by the street, or on a post or sign made of fire resistant material
- on the mailbox
- on the curb
- or anywhere they can be easily seen from the road
A clearly posted house number can save precious time should an emergency occur!

SENATE PASSES PROPERTY TAX REFORM PLAN
For the third consecutive year, the Republican led (ok, maybe led is too strong a word), but the Republican controlled Senate has passed legislation to end our horrible school property tax system.
I've got to hand it to the GOP. At least when their members talk about something the Senate votes to do whatever that something is - in this case reform school property taxes. I wish the same could be said for the Assembly.
Take Kevin Cahill for example. Cahill has been pushing a statewide income tax hike to allow for a State takeover of the property tax. Forget for a moment that there is enough lard in the State budget that we ought to be able to fund education without raising income taxes. Recognize that, as Cahill has said (via his legislation if not his words), the property tax is a lousy way to fund schools and an income based system is better. I have one simple question: WHY THE HECK HASN'T CAHILL HAD THE ABILITY TO GET HIS BILL VOTED ON?
Let's face it. Kevin's lips are locked tightly onto the rear end of Assembly boss Shelly Silver. He got the big Energy Chairmanship this year - paying big bucks and serving as a fundraising vehicle for him. How come if he is so smart and so powerful and such a senior member of the Assembly he can't even get a simple vote on what undoubtedly he would say is his most important bill: property tax reform.
The answer is simple: Cahill really isn't pushing his property tax reform plan. He introduces the bill, it goes to some committee and there it sits, waiting for the voters back home to realize he's playing us for the fool. Come on Assemblyman Cahill, get your bill voted on, show some backbone and demand change. Be part of the solution you went to Albany for years and years ago instead of being part of the problem. GET REAL ON PROPERTY TAX REFORM!
Hey Ulster Politics,

"Is it time for a vacation?" That thought was never in President Lincoln's mind. KingstonTruth is Ulster County's premier blog.
Another Ulster County blog author now proclaims himself as "fair and balanced". I have read no proof of that....especially since he can not bring himself to announce that Bernado was leading Hein in his unscientific county executive poll.Well, as they say talk is cheap.

As if any one assemblyman could get this massive a change to a vote. Be serious. It isn't just Silver, it is NYC and Long Island too and that is where the votes are.
You can count on one thing. When it does get to the point where there is a serious consideration to reforming property tax by the entire State Legislature, Senate included, Cahill and his bill will be front and center.
The Senate knows it can grandstand on this and not be held responsible for actually having to implement it, why do you think they do it? If they actually had to do it, they would not have passed it. No way, no how. Don't be naive.
If the votes were there, it would be done. Until they are there, it makes no sense to get everyone all excited over nothing.
Robin Yess, not that she has a chance in Hell anyway, is not the answer. A freshman from the ever dwindling minority, holding onto the stinky end of the stick will get nothing, zero, nada, zilch done. Especially if she is replacing a favorite of Silver. Cahill is the best chance for reform from the 101st, you may not like it, but it is the truth.
The fact of the matter is that Sheldon Silver has had a lifetime in the Assembly to do something about property taxes. He's been pretty clear, he's not even interested in trying.
At least the Senate is interested in trying. It's the Assembly and Sheldon Silver that are the problem.
I'm a Republican, and I have a lot of Democratic friends. NOT ONE of them will defend Sheldon Silver. I don't understand why there is not more of a bi-partisan effort to get rid of him.
Democrats and Republicans in the Hudson Valley want property tax relief now. Right now Silver is the only one who DOESN'T.
