2009 Begins

Ulster Politics rang in the new year in the warmth of headquarters – a smart move given the bitter temperatures.

Congratulations to Mike Hein and Elliott Auerbach on being sworn in an off to work. A lot of media attention, deservedly so on Hein – he’s the top dog. But Auerbach is no slouch and we have not read or heard a thing about his team.

We are counting on Elliott to hire truly independent aides. Lord knows he should do no favors to the Democratic establishment, that largely threw him under the bus during the election.

Auerbach really has to perform given that he has to run for re-election in just two years. He won in a true squeaker and has limited ability to raise money in his new post. 2008 was a stunning year for Democrats the likes of which will be historically improbable to repeat in 2010. For all those reasons, we hope he hires independent staff who will audit the heck out of every dollar that our officials try to spend.

Interesting that the County Clerk Nina Postupack is already announcing her candidacy. Nina raised some eyebrows by refusing to back her party nominee for County Executive. We can only wonder if there will be some pay back.

The rumor mill has Kingston's 7th Ward Alderman Bill Reynolds and Ulster County Legislator Rob Parete running against her. Rumors being rumors, who knows if there is any truth behind them. The Parete name commands respect – ask all the Republicans defeated under daddy Parete’s tenure as Party boss. Parete running as a Democrat would present a strong challenge, but the election is a long way’s off.

The City of Kingston races, as well as the County Legislature races will also make 2009 interesting to those who follow politics. Will the city Council go Republican? Can Glenn Noonan and Mario Catalano run a team of people to knock out three vulnerable Democrats while keeping all the GOP seats? Gary Bischoff, Jon Decker, T.J. Briggs, and perhaps one of the Rosendale area Dems could be vulnerable if the GOP works hard.

2009 . . . an exciting year for politics; and it’s only just begun.

Bill Reynolds is a throw away. Maybe he's looking for a promotion in Albany and figures being a good soldier will do him good. A name not talked about as being vulnerable is Brian Cahill. With Woerner's career over and Ulster to go solid red he could easily lose. Bischoff and Decker will are done. Brigs and Cahill are next two likely ones. If Rosendale goes with Pecora, Terpening, and Lomita they may sweep. The jerk Silvestri and his wife are done.

Cahill is very popular in Ulster. He has worked hard for a long time to get where he is. Woerner's 20% tax increase is a problem for any Democrat in Ulster. Too bad because Cahill deserves to be reelected. Nickie and his 20% tax increase do not.

I noticed Nina used the lectern from the Legislative chambers for her campaign announcement. How can she do that? Using County property for political purposes is against the law!

Using County property for political purposes is against the law!

we all use it during the public comment period when WE get to talk about anything we want.

lets just say that Nina used her public comment period today.

When WE use it, we don't take it 6 floors down to the street for a press conference, cover up the county seal with a campaign sign and use it for strictly political purposes.

oh quit yer bellyaching,, ya big crybabies,

Leave Nina alone, many of the recently elected or appointed high ranking democrats there today, supporting Nina all said they hope the UCDems cross-endorse her,, otherwise it will be a huge waste of resources, people & energy,
so deal with it & get over your sour grapes,

just cause you ain't working for the county, stop whining & get over it.

Name the Dems who were there.

I am sure they are the same type of Dems as Hein, fair weather friends.

It is wrong for her to use the county property for her press conference. Maybe our friend Holley Carnright wants to give an opinion on that.

Jeremy Blaber was there.
He's a real big Democrat

Don't forget Dem lover Bobby Boy Ryan.

Mario Catalano wasn't there. What an A*s

Ah Duh. The Republicans didn't even run a full slate during the last race for the legislature. Bischoff will win easily.

What's the story with Mario? The Millionaire Boys funded their own races in 2008 that would leave Mario with a load of cash. Pete raised over a 100 grand yearly without doing squat. Mario, being the "doctor" must be tripling that figure from his cronies alone. Two years, no real expenses, the guy's gotta be sitting on a 1/2 mil. I can only assume Mario is the Bank, why else would the GOP put up with such an arrogant blowhard. The U.C. GOP Crown: King Mario, his lovely, double lovely Knightyess & .....and the Executive Board Follies.

Give money straight to Nina. She will win even though Mario is trying to prevent a cross endorsement. Can you imagine Mario's Richie-Rich-partner wants to sink Nina, so she doesn't like bumper stickers. At least Skater Boy had the balls to speak up.

And where was Queen Nina this morning?

Everyone else in the Republican Party got themselves to the meeting.

She wants our support. Maybe she should show up to the meetings, or at least send a representative from her campaign.

She didn't support Quigley, Bernardo or Yess... maybe we should all stay neutral on her campaign as well.

Nina is just a little to slick for her own good. She is either a Republican or she isn't. Al Spada never missed meetings.

I say let's find a good Republican to primary her! What a crock of sh*t, not showing up to the meeting this morning. She had better decide which side she is on and decide now, you can't have it both ways Nina!

Great idea 5:29, but you know that would go over like a fart in church.

Someone would have to have really big balls.... like when Jean Jacobs went up against Jim Quigley.

I showed up for Nina's "announcement" but after she didn't show up at the meeting today, and hearing that Joan Quigley resigned as her treasurer, I don't intend on doing one single solitary thing for her or giving her any money.

She is no friend of the Republicans and neither is her campaign partner Mariann Degroodt

A fart in church...if well-timed, could actually work toward spiritual betterment in some cases!!
