Where are the jobs in Ulster County?
They are not in the private sector.
PressConnects.com in Binghamton reported on 3/26/09 that the Kingston, NY area has lost 1,600 private sector jobs since Feb 29, 08.
* In Kingston, the number of private sector jobs has decreased by 1,600, or 3.4 percent, since February 2008. The area’s unemployment rate was 8.4 percent in February, compared with 7.8 percent in January and 5.5 in February 2008.
What newspapers like the Times Herald Record and the Daily Freeman are not reporting, is that Ulster County Government is the best place to get a high paying job in the Hudson Valley.
The number of jobs in Ulster County Government that pay $100,000 or more have grown from ONE (the District Attorney) --- prior to the election of the new Ulster County Executive --- to over FIFTEEN, thanks to Mike ($135,000) Hein, our new Ulster County Executive and his good old boy (and girl) crew.
His Royal Hein @$$' ever growing list of Deputy County Executives and Assistant Deputy County Executives has pushed the number of $100,000+ jobs in Ulster County Government to double digits for the first time in the history of Ulster County!
More jobs for the residents of Ulster County? Only if you are a friend or relative.

Actually, Nina's sister, Alice, has
worked for the County Clerk's office for well over 20 years, i think.
Extremely qualified, very good @ her job & on the job experience is priceless.
Stick to the issues, this line of criticism is insulting. Oh right, if you stuck to the issues, you'd have nothing to criticise Nina about, so mud-slinging is the way you're going ??
Don't for get Nina's 2 brothers that work for the county too. John and Alex both work over in the I/S building. The only ones that don't work there are her Mother and 1 Brother.
If Hein ever imposes layoffs to balance the budget, some math wiz will figure out how many rank and file jobs could have been funded instead of the extra positions and pay raises Hein pushed through for the county executive's office. I suppose the office renovations could be added to that as well.
10:04, thanks for the confirmation that Nina's sister works for Nina.
In the real world, things like that aren't allowed.
It's called nepotism and is frowned upon in the corporate world.
But in the Good Old Boy and Girl world of Ulster County... anything goes if you are related.
You have got to be kidding me!
How f-ed up is this County when people are writing in on blogs and openly admitting that one Sister supervises another Sister in the same department AND saying that it is OK... or priceless? It is not priceless, it actually becomes a very expensive problem for the taxpayers.
Just because it is going on, does not mean it is right, it means that we have politicians who do not know the difference between right and wrong.
No wonder we can't get a decent ethics law passed in this County.
If you weren't part of the problem, you would know that sort of situation in the workplace is WRONG.
That is not mudslinging, that is the issue. Good ole girls keeping the family employed.
How can anyone OBJECTIVELY supervise their own sister?
Maybe Mike Hein could hire his wife as a Deputy Executive? And his son as an Assistant Deputy Executive.
New Ulster County Slogan:
Get elected here! We got jobs for all yer family!
Can anyone honestly tell me what Mike Hein has accomplished in his first 100 days in office?
I distinctly remember reading the headline in the Freeman--"Mike Hein hits the ground running!"
I think he showed up for work on his first day at 8:30 am.
Wow, that ranks right up there with Kingston's Sergeant Deitz winning the medal of honor! Someone call Barack Obama and nominate Mike Hein for the medal of honor! He showed up for work early!
The only thing I can think of is his press release that he renovated the website and made it more user-friendly.
Gee, we should throw him a ticker tape parade for that awe inspiring achievement. People are unemployed, there is no industry or buisnesses coming to Ulster, stores are closing every week, but Mike says, "Hey, the website is easier to use!"
What are all these high paying deputies doing with their time and (our tax dollars)? Has anyone heard from Adele Reiter? How about March Gallagher? What is she doing for economic development? Has anyone heard a peep out of these two or anyone of Mike's staff?
Congratulations Mike! You certainly set the bar high for your successor--for greed, corruption, and inefficiency, that is...
Ulster County is hack central. PERIOD.
Gee was it Nina or her sister that did such a great job sending out the foreclosure notice to the family in Stone Ridge to the wrong address?
It ended in a wrongful foreclosure of the house and Lew "selling" all of the family's possessions!
Now the Ulster County taxpayers are going to get a huge legal bill (thanks Catalinotto) and probably a legal settlement because Nina and Lew did such a great job.
WOW 12:03 is a little angry there does that mean they are a good old person with a 6 figure county job and no qualifications. By the way Nina is in the $100,000 plus bracket I think
to 10:04 (aka Marianne) and to BD who will probably want to chime in.
The best way to make this go away is to just shut up. The more that you try to defend someone on a blog, the more they (and you) will continue to be attacked.
And to knowwhatimtalking about... I don't want a government job, I want my elected officials to act in an ethical and competent manner. I also want them to bring jobs to Ulster County and work to lower our taxes. So far, they get a F.
knowwhati'mtalkingabout kinda/sorta knows what he/she is talking about, much like many of the political appointees he/she is defending are kinda/sorta qualified for their positions.
He/she did not talk about the games that are played with civil service lists after the exams are taken so that certain people who didn't score as well can be reached on the lists.
His/her argument of to the winner goes the spoils has some validity, but the county executive's office has taken a great deal of liberty in increasing the spoils at great cost to the taxpayers.
I wonder if he/she uses the same logic to defend the incredibly well paid executives of the many companies the taxpayers are currently bailing out.
12:03
If you really knew what you were talking about then you would know that to get elected you don't just run.
First you need to get a lot of money so unless your rich then that means cutting a bunch of deals with a local party to be cashed in later. That usually is not enough so you find some rich people in the community to give you money too. More deals are made for future tax breaks, zoning changes, etc.
Second you need volunteers to work many, many, many hours on your campaign. This is not free either. More deals are made, maybe you promise a couple of jobs etc. Don't worry if they are qualified cuz soon you are going to be "da man"
Third you need some hack to set up a blog for you so that you can launch personal attacks on your opponent but not have them traced to you. There is no deal involved here, after the election you just turn your back on him so he has to go to NYC to work.
Finally you need to put together many varied stances for each issue which you can pull out at a moments notice depending on who you are trying to convince to vote for you at the time.
It also helps if you can control the budget for your new position so that you can pad it to cover the new positions above and beyond what was alotted in the County Charter.
So in conclusion you don't just throw your name in the race and run. Those guys only last about 5 minutes.
The poster is correct
Mike is a Dem (sort of)....
Ponder this.... if Donaldson runs for County Clerk, who does Mike Hein support? bwahahahahahah
Nina is a Republican (sort of)....
Ponder this.... if Quigley runs for Supervisor against Nicky, who does Nina support? bwahahahahahahah
This is going to be a fun year!
It is not just Mike and Nina who will be puzzled in who to support. Elliot was at several of Nina's events and then there is retired good ol boy Lew. Maybe he will stay in Florida longer to say he could't make it. Then there is Nick "the made man I mean boy from Ulster. There will be a lot of. Dems in Ulster Ulster County who will have there loyality questioned.
Here is a radical idea.
Maybe you support the BEST PERSON for the J O B !
If Elliott thinks/knows that Nina is the most qualified & experienced then he supports her - Sometimes, Party loyalty takes a back seat to qualifications.
This means we get the best government - OH WATTA CONCEPT !
SHEEESH, the lack of brains by some of these posters just leaves me speechless.
Bottom line is you can keep criticizing her all you want...not one dem seems to have the gumption to run against her. Makes you wonder if any of those criticisms hold any water doesn't it. If she is that bad, then she should be easy to beat especailly with the numbers as they are. I would think one of these political geniuses could get the balls to run against her.
