Tedisco concedes to Murphy
Republican state Assemblyman Jim Tedisco conceded the New York special election this afternoon to Democratic businessman Scott Murphy, giving the Democrats a key off-year victory in a race that both parties aggressively contested.
Tedisco called to congratulate Murphy on his victory earlier this afternoon, according to a Democratic official familiar with the call.
“Earlier today, I called and congratulated Scott Murphy on a hard-fought contest and wished him well as the next Congressman of the 20th Congressional district," Tedisco said in a statement.
“This was a close campaign every step of the way. Ultimately, it became clear that the numbers were not going our way and that the time had come to step aside and ensure that the next Congressman be seated as quickly as possible."
The resolution of the race took several weeks to complete, as election officials spent weeks tallying absentee ballots from across the district. Murphy won the majority of the absentee ballots and, as the count wrapped up, it became apparent that Tedisco had no chance of overcoming his narrow deficit.
As of Friday afternoon, Murphy led Tedisco by 399 votes in the state Board of Elections' unofficial count.
In a statement, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Chris Van Hollen called Murphy’s victory a referendum on President Obama’s economic policies.
“Congratulations to Congressman-elect Scott Murphy on his remarkable, come-from-behind victory. In this election, voters responded to Scott Murphy’s record as a successful businessman who helped to create more than 1,000 jobs and his strong support for President Obama’s economic recovery package,” Van Hollen said in a statement.
National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Pete Sessions (R-Tex.) argued that the closeness of the race in a Democratic-held seat – it previously was represented by newly-appointed Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) – is an encouraging sign for the GOP.
“Since Election Day, we continue to hear the growing chorus of frustrated and concerned citizens who demand more from their government than profligate spending and mountains of debt that will be paid for in higher taxes by our children and grandchildren,” Sessions said in a statement.
“Although Jim was unsuccessful in his hope to change Washington, he has shed light on our Party’s efforts to win back the majority in the House.”
But in a sign that the GOP still faces obstacles to gain a significant number of seats in 2010, Sessions also acknowledged the party has its “work cut out…when it comes to winning in Democratic-held districts.”
President Obama narrowly carried the district with 51 percent of the vote last year, but the GOP holds a 70,000 voter registration advantage -- the largest GOP margin in all of New York.

WTH! I mean, how can it be, that historically, absentee ballots usually go republican, go for Murphy, especially when he is a no name. Something smells like rotten ACORNS around here. Everyone know North West Dutchess is liberal, especially with Bard College support, but come on. I guess the folks just don't care about high taxes, and deficit spending. If the majority of folks don't care, then neither do I. I can afford the high taxes, it sucks, and I hate handing it over to the government. But I want to know about the regular 'Joe', where 8000 dollars in income taxes on top of property, state, and sales taxes mean something.
to 8:46, You sound like a very sore loser. You act like Obama and the Democrats are the worst at this. Not even close. The Republican demigod Ronald Regan took a higher % of your tax dollars than any president and at the time, he created the largest budget deficit by far in USA history. Bush followed suit. It was Clinton who brought the budget under control and created a budget surplus only to see it squandered away by the worst president in USA history G.W. Bush.
It is time to realize the world is changing. It has awoken to the problems that a conservative based Government means. No more bullying to get our way, no more invading other sovereign lands to secure oil rights, no more catering to big business. These practices have lead the USA down a path of near destruction.
The problems the USA faces overseas and here with terrorism are self generated based on our interfering with other sovereign nations and trying to secure the flow of oil for the USA oil companies.
It is time for us to become that kinder, gentler nation that Georege Bush spoke of and then did not deliver. It will reap great rewards around the world and allow us to reduce our defense budget and focus on domestic problems and give us the ability to take care of our own.
The Neocons have done their damage to this country, it is time fro something new. Let's move on!
From Rasmussen (conducted: 4/20-21/09)
* 70% of U.S. voters believe that big business and big government generally work together against the interests of investors and consumers
* 14% disagree with the assessment
* 17% are not sure
Who was Pete Sessions arguing with. himself? Was no big margin but far from the Obama backlash that so many were predicting, as I recall even on this blog?...smitty
Congratulations Mr. Murphy and Thanks.
Looks like the republicans stayed home. If the votes roughly went along party lines, 40% of the republicans voted (80k/196k), and 64% (80k/125k) of dems voted. If the republicans are that unhappy, why didn't they come out in droves?
Specter concedes to the 21st Century...More Good News boys...smitty
So Smitty, you think a single party rule, is what is best? Sure, lots of countries 'enjoy' a single party system. Good ones, like Iran, Cuba, China, and 2 former governments of Iraq and Afganistan. You;re hanging with the winners Smit
No, but my socialist friends tell me Multi party rule does just fine in Europe and Israel. There they need to put together Coalitions of Democrats, Social Democrats and others to get things done.
Quite the contrary to your comment because when everyone thinks alike, it's usually a sign that a good many people are not thinking...smitty
Thanks for the thought Joe!!!
PS
When I ask them how it works, they say just fine...
Yea, it works great! If you are a socialist democrat. For the others, it is nothing more than social opression. But hey, after a generation or two of socialist democrats in charge changing education and changing the way we live, how may 'others' are actually left, huh? And that is exactly how you want it.
Joe,
The proper name of the party in these countries is Social Democrat not socialist democrat. Seems you have caught some kind of Bushism linguistic mis-speak around the word Democrat.
My best wishes to you and all your fellow travelers...smitty
Would you please take a look at my blog (specifically video) and give your thoughts? I'm in Ulster County and am getting stone-walled by the "good ol' boys network". http://howtoulster.blogspot.com/ AND http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pz1FcNmKP8
My child was in the car. They lied on the police report - said it didn't happen....
